About the Atrial Fibrillation Institute

Queensland Cardiovascular Group and the Atrial Fibrillation Institute

The Queensland Cardiovascular Group (QCG) has led in the development of new and innovative services over the last 30 years. The Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) services have been established and led by Dr. Wayne Stafford and Dr. John Hayes, who have built a world-leading reputation. In 1992, they established the first private EP Service in Queensland in collaboration with the St. Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, and now the Atrial Fibrillation Institute.

As a specialty driven by highly advanced technologies, cardiac electrophysiology has only significantly emerged in the last couple of decades and it continues to grow.  Increasingly sophisticated computer software, electrical cardiac mapping and ablation technologies have significantly changed the way that Atrial Fibrillation is managed. As the largest volume private EP service in Australia, our Institute’s collaboration with the medical technology industry provides our patients with advanced access to the latest cutting edge technologies.

We are proud to have grown our team to include highly experienced Cardiac Electrophysiologists, as well as our cardiac scientists and EP nurses. Our team are service focussed, but also have significant experience in research, teaching and regional outreach.

Our Vision

Our Vision is to provide a unique patient-focussed, comprehensive service to assist our patients, throughout their lifetime with Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation is a unique condition, with both acute episodes, and a long term impact on people’s health. It changes over time, and different treatments are appropriate at different stages of the condition.

We’re here to provide access to the most up-to-date, evidence-based services for people with Atrial Fibrillation and the community of family members, referring doctors and professionals that support them.

A Leading Service

Our team have a long history of leading advances in Atrial Fibrillation and Electrophysiology.

  • We have been performing complex Atrial Fibrillation ablations for over 16 years
  • We perform over 600 Atrial Fibrillation ablations per year, more than any other Cardiology Group in Queensland
  • We have the lowest published radiation exposures to patients for AFib ablations in Australia

Our History of "Firsts"

Here are some of the milestones that we’ve celebrated over the years.

  • The first Private Electrophysiology service in Queensland
  • The first Pacemaker implantation in private hospitals in Queensland
  • The first transvenous Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) insertion in private hospitals in Queensland
  • The first Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) insertion in private hospitals in Queensland
  • The first Radiofrequency (RF) ablation for Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) in private hospitals in Queensland
  • The second dual chamber Medtronic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) implanted in the world
  • The first Radiofrequency (RF) ablation for Atrial Flutter (AFL) in private hospitals in Queensland
  • The first Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT) device implanted in Queensland
  • The first Subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) implantation in a private hospital in Queensland
  • The only Laser Extraction system for removal of chronically implanted pacing and defibrillator leads in private hospitals in Queensland.
